Sanju Samson

Sanju Samson, regarded as the up-and-coming star from Kerala, is a great wicket-keeper batsman with sound batting and stumping technique. He made his first-class debut for Kerala against Vidarbha when he was 17 years old.

He had an instant impact, scoring two hundreds and a fifty in five matches the next season. He was acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2012, however he was never given a chance to play. In the 2013 IPL, Samson rose to prominence playing for the Rajasthan Royals.

He was sent to the UAE to compete for his nation in the 2012 Under-19 World Cup, and he didn’t let the selection committee down. He was India’s leading run scorer and the only member of the team to reach three fifties. In spite of India not making it to the semi-final, he came in sixth on the list of batters with the most runs throughout the entire tournament.

Samson was one of the players in the current group who Dravid said would succeed for India in the near future while Dravid was coaching the Royals in IPL-7. Samson was chosen for the 2015 Zimbabwe tour because to his dependable IPL performances. He participated in his debut game for India in a

When Dravid was the head coach of the Delhi Daredevils in the 2016 IPL auctions, he again displayed his faith by selecting Samson, and the wicket-keeper returned him by becoming the third-highest run-scorer for his squad. He was chosen for the India A tour of Australia and contributed a few valuable hits that helped India A win the quadrangular series against South Africa A, Australia A, and National Performance Squad. The Keralite was anticipated to succeed MS Dhoni as India’s gloveman after rising so high in the pecking order during the 2014–15 season. Tragically, his finances have since declined.

In light of the innate potential he possesses, Samson’s game didn’t truly progress as it should have. Despite having played on the domestic circuit for some time and being capable of performing jaw-dropping strokes from wherever on the court, his temperament remained that of a novice. If Samson has aspirations of playing cricket professionally on a global scale, he needs to address this as soon as possible. He has played for India on a relatively limited number of occasions thus far, and he hasn’t performed well. Samson needs to be alert because he will be up against the more explosive Rishabh Pant, who can bat from any position.

The IPL over the years

Sanju Samson is a talented shotmaker who can also keep wickets, although he was initially a member of the Kolkata Knight Riders, where he never had any opportunity. He was able to show the world his talent thanks to his time with the Rajasthan Royals. He was a key component of the RR batting lineup from 2013 to 2015, providing stability with his reliable performance and assisting the team’s acceleration with his scorching strokeplay. Despite his temper difficulties, Samson was regarded as a potential superstar and even quickly moved up the pecking order to succeed MS Dhoni thanks to his IPL achievements.

He hasn’t, however, ever experienced the breakout season that would enable him to advance his case over the years. Samson would frequently open an IPL season with a barrage of great runs before fading as the competition went on. He suffered greatly from a lack of interest in glovework in domestic cricket, and by the time he started getting back into the glovework, he had fallen far behind other Indian wicket-keeper batsman. Samson continued to demonstrate his strengths during a brief stay with Delhi, but his flaws also remained unchanged throughout the previous five years. He returned to RR at the new auctions in 2018, and after a promising start once more, the season turned out to be disappointing. The year 2019 wasn’t much different either.

Samson has been a key member of RR’s middle order, especially since being named the team’s captain in 2021. Additionally, the fact that Samson is a domestic recruit adds more value because it enables the team to spread out its foreign players among various positions. Samson is still seeking that one truly outstanding IPL season that will elevate his performance.
